I help dog owners in Weymouth with barking, pulling and reactive behaviour through practical, 1:1 training at home and out on walks.

Most people don’t get a dog because they want to spend their life managing behaviour.

They imagine enjoyable walks.
A dog that stays close.
A dog that comes when called.
A dog that can cope with everyday life without everything turning into chaos.

Not an overtrained robot.
Just a dog that fits comfortably into family life.

When It’s Not Working

But for many owners, things don’t quite work out that way.

Walks become stressful.
The dog pulls or reacts to everything.
Recall disappears.

And before long, life starts to revolve around managing behaviour.

The truth is, most of these problems come down to one thing.

The foundations were never properly built.

The Training Foundations Every Dog Needs

Most people think training means teaching commands.

Sit.
Down.
Stay.

But those things rarely solve the problems people struggle with day to day.

What most owners really need are simple behavioural foundations that make everyday life easier.

Proximity (Staying Close)

A dog that naturally stays near you on walks.

Not pulling ahead or dragging you towards every distraction.
Just a dog that moves with you and checks in.

When a dog learns proximity, walks become calmer and more enjoyable.

Premack (The Walk-On Cue)

Dogs enjoy the environment — sniffing, exploring, running ahead.

Instead of constantly stopping these behaviours, we use them as rewards.

A walk-on cue tells your dog when it’s okay to go and enjoy those things.

You decide when it happens, not the dog.

For example, if your dog loves water, you don’t want them charging in without thinking. But if they stay close and calm, you can give permission to go and swim safely.

The behaviour you want earns the reward.

Reliable Recall

When you call your dog, they come back.

Not eventually.
Not after chasing something.

A reliable recall gives you confidence and freedom on walks.

Loose Lead Walking

Walking your dog should feel calm and enjoyable, not like your arm is being pulled out of its socket.

Loose lead walking isn’t about stronger equipment.

It comes from teaching your dog how to stay connected to you and move calmly through the environment.

When those pieces are in place, walks start to feel good again.

About Louise Kirby

About Me

Louise Kirby
Pro Dog Trainer, Behaviour & Nutrition Coach

My name’s Louise. I’m a Pro Dog Trainer, Behaviour & Nutrition Coach working with dogs that struggle with everyday situations, including reactivity, anxiety, and over-arousal.

I help owners who feel like behaviour is starting to take over, whether that’s stressful walks, barking, pulling, or a dog that just can’t seem to settle.

My Approach

My training is science-based and force-free.

I don’t use punishment, physical corrections, intimidation, or training gadgets designed to suppress behaviour. Instead, I focus on understanding what is driving the behaviour and helping the dog develop the skills they need to cope more successfully.

Behaviour change comes from lowering stress, improving emotional responses, and teaching dogs practical ways to navigate situations they currently find difficult.

When a dog feels safer and more capable, behaviour begins to change in a way that is sustainable for both the dog and the owner.

How I Work

I use structured behaviour plans, carefully designed training games, and practical strategies that help dogs build calmness, confidence, and resilience over time.

I work closely with owners throughout the process so you understand what your dog is experiencing and how to support real, lasting progress.

Everything is focused on real-life situations, so the training holds up where you actually need it — at home and out on walks.

Qualifications

My background combines qualifications in behaviour, education, and canine nutrition, including:

  • BA (Hons)
  • PGCE
  • Certified Pro Dog Trainer
  • BCCSDip.HthNut

This gives me a strong foundation in how animals learn, how behaviour develops, and how environment, stress, and emotional state influence the way dogs respond to the world around them.
